There are a handful of areas in Nepal that are still rarely visited by outsiders and considered extremely remote. Kanchenjunga region is one of them. This trek takes you through pleasant villages and beautiful forests in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and is named after Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m). It is the second highest mountain in Nepal and the third highest in the world. Kanchenjunga was designated as a conservation area in March 1998, and covers an area of 2035 sq. km. This gem is in the northeast corner of Nepal near the Sikkim area renowned for many who follow the Bon religion that pre-dates Tibetan Buddhism. Taplejung district is also renowned for its high peaks with 11 that stand higher than 7,000 m and is full of sparkling glaciers. The conservation area is considered unique in the world as a mountain ecosystem. It is envisioned as a tri-national peace park with Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China to the north and Sikkim, India, in the east. In Sikkim, India there already exists the Kanchenjunga National Park. This is adjacent to the KCA of Nepal. The Qomolungma Nature Reserve in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China is in progress to become the 3rd part of the proposed peace park.
